Filet Crochet Increase or Decrease

Filet crochet increase or decrease allows us not only to make rectangular or square filet crochet projects but to shape them any form that can be visualized on the cell grid. Round, oval, polygonal, with scallops and teeth , you name it.

We will consider methods of increasing or decreasing the number of the filet blocks by the example of 4dc mesh.  For this kind of filet mesh each solid block has FOUR  double crochets in it. To crochet open block, two dc in the middle of block we substitute by two chains.

For all other options of filet crochet mesh making increases/decreases will be the same.  You will only have to adjust number of stitches required.

For rare occasions  application of the slip stitches, treble crochets  and double trebles is necessary.  Picture on the right shows you all family of stitches necessary for making increases or decreases while filet crocheting .

Filet Crochet Decrease.

There are a few different ways to make filet crochet increase or decrease. Here are the simplest ones to crochet.

Decreasing a solid or open block at the beginning of a row.

Work 1 chain, slip stitch into next three double crochets (if a block below is solid) OR slip stitch into two chains and dc (if a block below is open). Chain 3 for the next block,  follow your pattern  to crochet next solid OR open block.
